Chapter 1
Basically the writers of Jane the Virgin are geniuses. They lay little Easter eggs for us and, as we all
know, they can play the long game with some of these clues. I wanted to point out a few obvious clues
in the pilot and also some that probably aren’t clues but I’m noting them anyway just in case.
Season 5 isn’t out yet, and some of these things may come into play. But first...

There are all sorts of spoilers here, so only read this if you've seen Jane the Virgin through the end of Season 4.

“Our story begins with a Prologue…”
The show opens on a close up of a white flower. Ten year old Jane holds a white gardenia flower in her
hand. Jennie Urman Snyder (showrunner) keeps saying that the series will be a full circle, so maybe the

But on to the clues in Chapter 1…
That Rogelio is Jane’s dad...
When Jane says goodbye to Michael on the front porch, Una Flor by Juanes plays in the background.
It’s the theme music for Rogelio’s telenovela, The Passions of Santos. Later in a flashback, the same
song is playing when Xo walks into a take-out place and sees Jane’s dad for the first time in 23 years.
If we put two and two together, the music means that The Passions of Santos was on at the restaurant
and that Xo saw Jane’s dad on the tv.

We get another clue that Rogelio is Jane’s dad while the Villanueva’s watch The Passions of Santos.
While Jane eats her grilled cheese sandwich, Xo looks for resemblances between Jane and Rogelio.

That Jane is the heroine of our telenovela...
I mean, duh. But just in case, in the locker room of the Marbella, Roman Zazo hands out straws.
Jane pulls the short straw and Zaz announces that Jane "get(s) the tail." Get it? Jane gets to wear
the mermaid tail for the hotel party, but also, she gets the tale (story).

Yeah, ok, we already knew Jane was the hero of the story, but I just want ya'll to see how there are
little gems everywhere in this show... in words, in scenery, just about everywhere.

That Rafael is the hero of our telenovela...
Santos/Rogelio stares off into the distance and tells, Blanca, "Despite the circumstances there's one
thing I know. We were meant to be, my love." Then Rogelio looks off into the distance, we pan over
the water, and then we see Rafael Solano, looking off into the distance just like Santos was. So we
have a direct visual connection between the hero of the telenovela (Santos) and our hero, Rafael.

That Rose is bad news...
Right as the narrator is saying that the accidental insemination of Jane was not actually Louisa’s
biggest mistake, the camera shows Rose walking in.

That Xo and Ro end up together...
in Xo's flashback where she first saw Ro on tv, Xo sees Santos/Rogelios proposing to Blanca.
The background is filled with white roses, and it looks like Ro is actually proposing to Xo.

And something I don't understand...
But back to Jane and Michael kissing on the porch. While they kiss, we see Jane's hand on Michael's
gun. It's a weird place to put your hand when you're kissing someone. At the end of the pilot, when
Jane and Michael kiss again, Michael covers the flower in Jane’s hair with his hand and then the flower
falls to the ground. Is this just a nice way to sandwich the episode or is there some sort of meaning
behind this?
